- The singer-songwriter has reportedly lost 100 pounds after adopting a new diet plan and more intense workout routine, according to one trainer who has worked with her.
Adele just celebrated her 33rd birthday, or as she describes it "thirty free." She has been living her best life for ages, but fans have noticed a change in her over the past few years. It seems like she’s been super happy, and she’s reportedly made healthy lifestyle changes that have led to weight loss.
Worth noting: Adele has never publicly spoken about her weight loss, and clearly that’s her prerogative. But it’s only natural to have questions about such a big change.
So…how did Adele lose weight? For starters, Adele reportedly went on the Sirfood Diet, which focuses on eating certain proteins. She also gave up processed food, sugar, and soda. (But more on all that later.)
Here's everything to know about Adele’s healthy lifestyle—and how she got there.
Adele started making headlines with her weight loss at the end of 2019.
Again, Adele hasn't ~actually~ talked about her weight loss, but she has shared photos that show the changes. She first made headlines at Drake's birthday party in October, per Page Six, and on a photo of her presumably at the shindig, she said: "I used to cry but now I sweat 😂"
Adele got fans talking again with a Christmas photo of her posing with someone dressed as the Grinch, with fans calling her an "inspiration." One wrote: "You're gorgeous now and you were gorgeous before!!!"
In January 2020, a 19-year-old fan told People that she had a brief conversation with Adele at a restaurant. "She said she lost something like 100 pounds, and that it’s such a crazy positive experience,” the fan told the publication. “She seemed so happy, and she looked amazing. She seemed really confident.”
Then, for her 32nd birthday in May 2020, Adele posted a more dramatic photo to thank her fans for all the love and well wishes, as well as the first responders and essential workers "for keeping us safe."
Fans hardly recognized the singer in August 2020, when she posted a photo to congratulate Beyonce on the release of Black Is King. "Thank you Queen for always making us all feel so loved through your art ♥️♥️," she wrote in her caption.
Since then, Adele has been seen in a bikini top with the Jamaican flag as a tribute to the Notting Hill Carnival. "Happy what would be Notting Hill Carnival my beloved London 🇬🇧🇯🇲," she wrote in the caption. One commenter added: "We're happy she's out here living her best life.... You look great hun...."
Adele appeared on SNL in October 2020, and fans were quick to notice the singer's weight loss.
She joked about it in her opening monologue as well. "I know I look really, really different since you last saw me," Adele said. "But actually, because of all the Covid restrictions…I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me, and this is the half I chose."
Adele hasn’t been sharing much on Instagram lately, but she dropped a series of pics on May 5 to celebrate her 33rd birthday. She added two words "Thirty Free," in the caption.
The photos show a smiling and slimmed-down Adele—without makeup, swimming in turquoise waters, and twirling around in a gorgeous tie-dye print dress.
Adele's weight loss is primarily due to a new diet plan.
The secret to Adele's weight loss, according to personal trainer and Pilates instructor Camila Goodis, is not hours spent at the gym, but a complete overhaul of her regular diet. Goodis met the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter during a training session with Adele's friend and former X-Factor judge Adya Field. While Adele is not currently one of Goodis' clients, the trainer believes that "90 percent" of Adele's weight loss is a result of a change in her diet, including eliminating processed food, sugar, and soda.
"I don’t believe she liked exercise much, but she has changed her lifestyle," Goodis told The Sun. "Giving up processed food, sugar, soda and get into an exercise routine, like cardio and strength training, will change people’s body."
Adele has also been trying out the Sirtfood Diet, per the New York Post—a diet plan that focuses on sirtuins, a.k.a. proteins in your body that specialize in cellular health and metabolism. The diet includes kale, extra-virgin olive oil, buckwheat, matcha, blueberries, and arugula, but also allows for red wine and dark chocolate, according to the Post.
However, nutritionist Glen Matten, who helped develop the program, told the publication that even with those few indulgences, the diet is hard. For three days, participants are supposed to only eat 1,000 calories a day of sirtuin-heavy foods and green juices before increasing their caloric intake to 1,500 calories a day.
And, Adele's more intense exercise routine includes three workouts a week.
Beyond changing up her diet, Adele did work with a personal trainer. The singer started her new exercise plan and worked out three times a week, according to US Weekly. "She does 60-minute sessions that include cardio, circuit training, and Pilates," a source told the publication in July 2019. "She’s found a routine that’s working for her and is enjoying it more."
Adele isn't sweating solo. She's was reportedly doing Pilates with Meghan Markle, NBD. Adele had been visiting the Sussexes' house when they lived in L.A. to take private Pilates lessons with Meghan. The pilates instructor has also been working with Harry, who sees the exercise as a great way to relieve stress.
Weight loss or not, Adele seems incredibly happy these days. And really, that’s all that matters.
